PEACE AND JUSTICE

Come be Christ's hands and feet!

“To all of you I affectionately say again: may the risen Christ guide all of you and the whole of humanity on the paths of justice, love and peace.”

Peace and Justice Committee

Vision:

The Peace and Justice Committee supports the parish by encouraging reflection and inspiring action based on the Church’s social teachings to make a difference in the lives of others.

Mission:

In realizing our vision, our mission is three-fold:

  • Catechesis: to make parishioners aware of the Church’s social teachings
  • Advocacy: to support initiatives that remedy injustice in our society
  • Outreach: to provide leadership in carrying out the corporal works of mercy

Guided by our Vision and Mission statements, the Peace and Justice Committee explores together how, in our very complicated world, we might offer the time, talent and treasures of our parish in service to the kingdom of God, focusing on the messages of justice, love and peace that beckon us from the Gospels. Deliberations are guided by the Church’s traditions and teachings about mercy, justice and the common good.

Current Committee discussions and efforts focused on:

  • Sustaining Community – planning communications and programs that offer the opportunity to reflect, dialogue, pray and act on God’s presence in human affairs.
  • Tithe Programadministering our Parish program to support local, national and international organizations that work in the areas of. direct service (feeding the hungry, providing shelter, accessing health care, …), education and advocacy to advance our church’s teachings about mercy, justice and the common good.
  • Homelessness and Affordable Housingsupporting Family Promise of Pickens County and its efforts to meet homeless family’s immediate needs for shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services.
  • Food Insecurity – responding as individuals and as a parish to the Gospel imperative to feed the hungry. The Parish September focus on Hunger is a major effort.
  • Immigration – animating the parish with ongoing information and timely action on current immigrations issues.
  • Creation Care – involving the parish in regular discussions and actions related to creation care.
